4 Reasons to Invest in Sealing Components
Sealing components are used to create a barrier between two surfaces in order to prevent the leakage of gases or liquids. They are an essential part of many products and systems, and are used in a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, and more.
There are several reasons why someone might choose to use sealing components:
- Reliability: Sealing components are designed to be highly reliable and effective at preventing leaks. This can be important in applications where even a small leak could cause significant problems or damage.
- Durability: Sealing components are typically made from materials that are resistant to wear and tear, making them long-lasting and durable.
- Versatility: There are many different types of sealing components available, including O-rings, gaskets, seals, and more. This allows users to choose the sealing component that is best suited for their specific application.
- Ease of use: Many sealing components are easy to install and maintain, which can make them a convenient choice for a wide range of applications.
Overall, sealing components are an essential part of many products and systems, and are chosen for their reliability, durability, versatility, and ease of use.
How to choose seal components?
Concentricity and roundness of components
When evaluating applications, bear in mind that components are not perfectly concentric or circular. Concentricity and roundness can also vary with pressure and temperature. When sizing seals, consider the worst-case scenario for your application and ensure that the seal system you select will work in the worst-case scenario.
If, after checking the calculations for your application, you find that seal integrity may be compromised when sizing close to the worst case, consider making the following adjustments before recalculating.
Reduce the clearance between components.
Reduce the tolerance of the component.
Use seals with larger cross-sections to absorb the additional tolerances.
Increase seal squeeze (this will also increase friction).
Improve component alignment and support to reduce eccentricity.

Seal installation – avoiding damage
Seals can easily be damaged during installation. For example, seals are often inserted into a shaft by sliding over the threaded surface. To avoid seal damage, reduce the diameter of the rod in the threaded area. Also include a chamfered guide for the seal to avoid sharp corners on the recess.
Peripheral compression
In some applications, such as rotary seals, the seal size is selected and the seal groove is designed so that the free state diameter of the seal ring is larger than the groove diameter. When installed, the seal will be compressed by the groove to a smaller diameter. This is known as “placing the seal under peripheral compression” or simply “peripheral compression”.
Peripheral compression seals are used in rotating applications to prevent the seal from failing due to heat as a result of material shrinkage. They are also used in face seal applications when the seal is under positive internal pressure. It should be noted that perimeter compression seals do not experience installation stretch, as the seal is compressed rather than stretched during installation.
