Benefits of Polyurethane Seals
Polyurethane is an elastomer consisting of organic units linked by urethane chains. This material is used to make everything from foam sponges to automotive bushings to synthetic fibres such as spandex.
Polyurethane O-rings, polyurethane gaskets and polyurethane seals are ideal for applications that require the properties of rubber or plastic, but with the durability for challenging environments that these materials cannot withstand. They exhibit excellent wear resistance, chemical resistance, elasticity and resilience. Polyurethanes are also highly resistant to abrasion, cutting, cracking, high impact and heavy loads.
If polyurethane is not chemically compatible with your application, please see our chemical compatibility chart to find the best material for your needs.
Common applications for polyurethane gaskets etc. include bulk material transfer systems, hydrotesting, fluid transfer systems, non-destructive testing, automotive and hydraulic systems.
Polyurethane gaskets for high-impact applications
The many benefits of polyurethane gaskets include excellent tear, abrasion and solvent resistance, as well as superior bonding ability, high load carrying capacity and long service life. Although polyurethane is not suitable for high temperatures, it resists cracking even at the lowest temperatures. Gaskets made from polyurethane also perform well in the presence of grease, oil, fat, ozone and some mild chemicals. These gaskets are the first choice for high-impact applications such as wear pads, machine supports and aerospace and automotive components.
Polyurethane O-Rings are commonly used in the mechanical industry, especially where high wear resistance and strength are required. Polyurethane O-rings are particularly suitable where the O-ring is subjected to dynamic loads. This includes, for example, applications in hydraulics, pneumatics and a wide range of other critical areas. In many cases, polyurethane O-rings can be used as an alternative to NBR due to their high mechanical strength.
What are the practical benefits of polyurethane O-Rings?
If your application requires a material with outstanding physical durability, polyurethane O-rings are the way to go. Polyurethane, also known as polyurethane, gains its unique benefits and advantages through its unique structural bonds. These bonds are unique because they combine soft polyol chain segments with tough isocyanate chain segments, resulting in a flexible but still durable material. There are several types of polyurethane suitable for a variety of applications.
Types of polyurethanes
Like all types of material, there are different types of polyurethane, each with its own advantages and applications. The most common of these varieties is polyester and most polyurethane seals are based on polyester. Polyester-based O-rings are resistant to hydrocarbon oils and hydraulic fluids.
The other two types of polyurethane are polyether-based and polycaprolactone-based rings. Polyether-based O-rings have the advantage of better hydrolytic stability and act at lower temperatures. Polycaprolactone-based O-rings are a subclass of polyesters and have some of the low-temperature properties and oil resistance of the polyether rings mentioned above.
